Charlbury residents and anyone else interested are invited to a tea and cake party to mark the launch of the town’s Year of Nature Recovery on 11th January 2025. The purpose is serious, but the event is designed to be informal and fun. There will be plenty of refreshments and the chance to speed date on ideas to restore nature around Charlbury. It will happen at the Memorial Hall in Charlbury between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday the 11th so join us there!
The event is organised by Charlbury’s Land and Nature Group, which connects individuals and organisations involved in nature and wildlife activities in Charlbury and nearby parishes. It will start with some inspirational ideas shared by Catriona Bass from the Long Mead nature recovery project in Eynsham, showcasing a successful grassroots approach to nature conservation. Attendees will also hear from pop-up speakers about some local initiatives, and there will be opportunities for community members to share their ideas and make plans over tea, coffee, and cake.

Charlbury Year of Nature of Nature Recovery is about giving local meaning to Britain’s 2022 commitment to the UN’s “30 by 30” goal, aiming to protect 30% of land and sea for biodiversity by 2030. With only six years left to meet this objective, Charlbury is in a relatively fortunate position, with a rich natural heritage and many local individuals, landowners, and groups already involved efforts to support nature. But there is still plenty more to do and plenty more opportunity for lots of fun and creativity to accompany our responses to this serious challenge.
We want to encourage input from everyone living locally to contribute ideas about existing and potential nature-related activities in gardens, greenspaces, and broader landscapes. We would also love to have contributions from musicians, writers, and artists inspired by nature, emphasizing the importance of nature for the health and well-being of all ages. The initiative invites participation from young people and hopes for involvement from the medical centre, sports clubs, schools, and local businesses throughout the year.
