SusCha has been working with Charlbury Primary School to build awareness of environmental issues among 5 to11 year olds. Grants of £9,500 were paid out from 2021-2023 to support activities that included hiring a consultant, Kat Pringle, to develop a programme entitled “Learning for Sustainability”. She was then employed for several hours a week to implement the recommendations which put education about the environment into the curriculum for children of all ages at the school.
Our grants also funded a tree planting programme on Wychwood Paddocks, a recreation space near the school, and a workshop teaching children about the importance of pollinator insects. In 2022, Charlbury Primary School was awarded the international accreditation of an Eco School Green Flag, with Distinction, for its work in raising children’s eco-awareness.
Sustainability in the curriculum
As well as helping to get sustainability into the timetable, SusCha has supported the school in efforts to upgrade facilities and tackle high energy costs. We contributed £10,000 towards the installation of energy-efficient lighting in spring 2024 and have recently paid for the preparation of a whole building plan. It sets out the measures needed to reach net zero emissions and the order in which they should be undertaken. SusCha will help the school pay for implementation of the plan.
