Jim Clemence has been kind enough to share his experience of sash window draughtproofing for a listed building.

“Our house is listed so double glazing is not an option. English Heritage does not even buy into the carbon economics of replacing existing sashes with new double glazed.”

“I spent some time researching options and had quotes from national and regional firms who offer a draughtproofing service. They install mainly

brush seals and quotes from the national were £310-380 per window, and the other was comparable.”

“A neighbour and I have started installing a sash window draught proofing system sold by Mighton. I think it may even be superior because the strips will not be damaged by paint like the brushes.”

“If you can find a joiner skilled in repairing sash windows or are an above average DIYer, the installation takes about 1 day per window (which includes adjusting the window fit and reweighting) and the parts work out at £20-30 depending on window size. Installation guides and videos on their website. The total cost seems to work out less than half the cost of the national branded service and as I said the result may be better.”

“We have done 6 windows so far and the finished window operates like a new modern window, draught and rattle free.”

“If anyone wants to have a look they are welcome and they can borrow a Mighton router bit (there are better ones on the market – I can give details if anyone’s interested).”

“I cannot comment on whether the results are better than the Hook Norton Low Carbon suggestion of using silicone filler and Vaseline…. I’ll let someone else try that.”
